Ysbrant werd als schilder opgeleid in Londen, Antwerpen en Venetië. Telkens kwam hij in aanraking met de belangrijke artistieke tradities van deze steden. Tot op vandaag zijn hiervan reflecties terug te vinden in de subtiele referenties aan werken van andere kunstenaars – onder meer James Ensor, Gustaaf De Smet, Constant Permeke en Edgard Tytgat – die hij in deze steden ontdekte en die hij in zijn eigen oeuvre zowel thematisch als plastisch verweeft. Als schilder en etser is Ysbrant ook gefascineerd door andere grote kunstenaars, waaronder Francisco Goya en Giambattista Tiepolo. Net zoals hen combineert hij zijn ervaringen als schilder met grafsisch vakmanschap om zijn emotionele en sensuele wereld uit te drukken. Lijnen en vlakken zijn dikijls spaarzaam op doek gezet, als op etsen. Agressief ingebeten vlakken, in kleur gedrukt of zelf ingekleurd, transformeren de etsen soms tot een schilderkunstig geheel. nDe hier samengebrachte etsen ontstonden tussen 1963 en 2003. Ze zijn gemaakt door een kunstenaar die gevoelig is voor alle kunst, zonder beperking in ruimte of tijd.

Ysbrant received his training as a painter in London, Antwerp and Venice. In each case he came into contact with the most important artistic traditions of these cities. Up to today, he continues to reflect this in subtle references to works from other artists he discovered there – James Ensor, Gustaaf De Smet, Constant Permeke and Edgard Tytgat and others – weaving these within his work, both thematically and visually. As a painter who etches, Ysbrant also has a fascination for other master painters, and here we cite Francisco Goya and Giambattista Tiepolo. In common with this pair, he too combines his experiences as a painter with his graphic craftmanship in order to express his emotional and sensual world. Agressive bitten-in planes, printed in colour or coloured-in by himself, sometimes transmute the etchings to the painterly whole.nThe etchings assembled for this volume were all produced between 1963 and 2003. They are from the hand of an artist who is open to all art, without boundary in time or space.
